The action takes place during the American wars of the 1740s. Natty and his friend Harry attempt to save a trapper and two young women, whose floating fort on Lake Glimmerglass is besieged by the ruthless Iroquois. The tension steadily increases to the point at which a cruel outcome seems inevitable.
The exciting action, the romantic potentialities and the knowledgeable evocation of frontier life (with its moral and racial conflicts) have made this novel a perennial favourite. The courageous Natty, with his problematic values, has set the precedent for countless American heroes. Culturally, The Deerslayer has proved to be a powerfully influential work.

Фенімор Купер та англійська
Джеймс Фенімор Купер - відомий американський письменник - митець пригодницького роману періоду перед Громадянською війною у США у 1861-1865 роках.
Роман "Звіробій, або Перша стежка війни" є цікавим роман для багатьох людей. Особливо цікаво читати справжню класику в оригіналі. У цьому виданні книги "Звіробій" текст не є адаптованим, а подано в оригіналі з певними корективами згідно сучасної англійської мови.
Читаючи цю книгу можна дізнатися про справжні та актуальні англомовні скорочення слів і фраз, розмовний стиль у діалогах головних персонажів, особливо Натаніеля Бампо та Юдифь чи Гаррі.
Але читач може стикнутися з певною проблемою. Вона не має жодного стосунку до оформлення чи змісту книги. Це є задум автора: головний героя, Натаніель Бампо, вимовляє деякі слова не зовсім так як інші американські колоністи. Можливо цих Фенімор Купер хотів передати те, що Натті довгий час жив серед індіанців, що вплинуло на його спосіб мовлення. Щоб передати це на письмі, Фенімор Купер змінював у деяких словах певні букви. Але дивлячись за контекстом можна легко зрозуміти, що ці слова означають.
Ця книга цікава, а читання її англійською і ще принесе Вам багато користі.
