A gorgeous flapped paperback edition of one of the most famous animal stories ever written.

Black Beauty is the finest horse imaginable. As a young colt, he lives an idyllic life under the guidance of his mother, Duchess, who teaches him to always be patient and do his best. Once he is grown, Beauty is sent to the charming Birtwick Park. There, under the care of kindly owners, he befriends the cheerful pony Merrylegs and the spirited but troubled mare, Ginger.

For a while, Beauty's life seems perfect. But when tragedy strikes, his owners are forced to sell him. Suddenly, the sweet-tempered animal is forced from a life of comfort to one of unimaginable cruelty. From neglectful masters to the gruelling work of London cabs, he faces countless hardships. Yet against all odds, Beauty's hope remains unbreakable - for he is a horse of extraordinary courage and is determined to survive.

Part of the new Pushkin Children's Classics series of thrilling, magical and inspiring stories from around the world, which young readers will return to time and again.

Anna Sewell (1820-1878) was an English author born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. After a childhood injury left her with limited mobility, she was often required to travel by horse-drawn carriage, which gave her many opportunities to observe horses and the ways they were treated. These observations inspired her to write Black Beauty, one of the first English novels to be written from the perspective of an animal.
