Shall we just cut to the chase? You want this because…Haidee-Jo and, well, rules. There’s an old engineering adage: “if it looks right, it is right”, although it’s worth saying that it has to look right to an engineer. When it comes to art, everyone’s a critic, so it has to look right to the viewer. I write. Sometimes I start a sentence with a conjunction and end it with a preposition. Is that grammatically correct? No, but the alternative is something up with which I shall not put.
You see? There are no rules, just what’s right in context. Can we move on now? No we can’t, because I still have to explain why you would want a book I’ve just told you is irrelevant. Except, of course, that it isn’t. Rules are good, I like rules, rather in the way that Douglas Adams liked deadlines: “I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by”. If you don’t know why you’re doing what you shouldn’t be doing, you’re going to do it wrong.
At the beginning, I gave you the main cogent reason for buying this book and you won’t be disappointed. Yes, all of what I just said is relevant, as is the permission from your favourite oil painter to do what you like. Behind it all, of course, what you’re really hoping for is Haidee-Jo Summers’ Hints and Tips and you can reasonably regard the book as that too.
So we’re agreed. You want this book. You want it to be a lot of things, which is a big ask. Good job it steps up to the plate, then.
