Discover how the books that defined ornithology changed the way we see birds – and why they matter more than ever today.

The Ornithologist’s Library is a richly illustrated history of the most influential works in bird study, from early naturalists to modern field guides. Exploring landmark texts by figures such as John James Audubon and Gilbert White, it reveals how art and literature have shaped our understanding of avian life across centuries.

At a time of accelerating biodiversity loss, this book shows how these works continue to inspire conservation and deepen our connection to the natural world, including:

• A chronological journey from ancient manuscripts to contemporary ornithology classics.
• Key authors and thinkers who transformed bird science and conservation.
• Stunning visual material, including high-quality illustrations and rare archival material.
• A global perspective spanning Western and non-Western contributions.
• Contemporary relevance, linking historical books to modern conservation efforts and challenges.

Beautifully produced and deeply engaging, this is both a celebration of ornithological literature and a call to recognise the vital role birds play in our ecosystems.

Step into the library that shaped our understanding of birds and discover why their story is so essential.

"The increasing accessibility and development of ornithology cannot be viewed through written word alone; art and avian study go hand in hand - and Bingham highlights the role of illustrators well. This attractive hardback features illustrations of the authors, artists and works it discusses on almost every page, with descriptive captions complementing the text... this is a book that should appeal to anyone wanting to better understand our long-established relationship with birds and the people who have progressed that relationship throughout history."
