Описание книги

Read the searing first novel from the celebrated author of Beloved, which immerses us in the tragic, torn lives of a poor black family in post-Depression 1940s Ohio.

Unlovely and unloved, Pecola prays each night for blue eyes like those of her privileged white schoolfellows. At once intimate and expansive, unsparing in its truth-telling, The Bluest Eye shows how the past savagely defines the present. A powerful examination of our obsession with beauty and conformity, Toni Morrison’s virtuosic first novel asks powerful questions about race, class, and gender with the subtlety and grace that have always characterised her writing.

The Bluest Eye
This is my favorite Toni Morrison novel so far. The story is absolutely tragic, and although the reader learns what's going to happen to the main characters on the first page, it is still impossible to put down. The style is very similar to other Morrison novels, with beautiful imagery and a plethora of symbols that are so fun to decode, but arguably more innovative, especially in the prologue (I am still wondering about the significance of blending words). Morrison's social critique mainly revolves around eurocentric beauty standards, though of course this book is about so much more than that. This is one of those novels you can read several times and still keep getting something new out of it, no wonder Morrison won a Nobel Prize!
