Tim Bartlett began sailing as a child on the Thames. After teaching sailing in commercial sailing schools, he became a full time yacht skipper. After five years running his own engineering company he became technical editor of Motor Boat and Yachting. He has written several books, including The Adlard Coles Book of Navigation and The Adlard Coles Book of Outboard Motors.

Aimed at boatowners rather than experienced mechanics, The Adlard Coles Book of Outboard Motors is a boon to anyone who puts to sea with an outboard engine. Covering both 2 and 4 stroke engines, the book explains how even the most sophisticated of modern outboards use simple processes to convert fuel to power, and then looks at each of the sub-systems that allow those processes to take place:
- the fuel system
- the ignition system
- cooling and lubrication
- the electrical system
- transmission and controls

The book includes sections on routine maintenance and fault finding, and even has a photo sequence showing the vital first aid required to save the life of an outboard engine that has been dropped overboard!

'Explains in clear, jargon-free English how an outboard works and how to look after it' Kelvin Hughes

'An excellent book, well thought out and well written' Motorboats Monthly

'Written by Tim Barteltt, the publication is written for boaters with no mechanical knowledge and throughout its pages aims to impart enough information to make you understand your engine - all in a jargon free lingo'

'Tim Bartlett takes the reader under the cover of an outboard engine and explains in clear, jargon-free language how an outboard motor works and ow to look after it.'

'contains all you need to know to provide basic care, maintenance and trouble shooting for your power unit...written by respected marine journalist and engineering guru Tim Bartlett.'

'a valuable reference guide'

'Tim Bartlett has written yet another successful book in addition to his many technical manuals which is an essential reference for the serious sailor.'

'covers the full range of motors down to those that power yacht tenders...Its a reasonable introductory volume, for those who would normally panic and take their engine to a mairne engineer the minute it misbehaves.'

'Tim Bartlett does an excellent job in making the introductions and laying the foundations for a life-long, trouble free friendship. With wonderful colour pics and diagrams, and clear, simple language, he explains the complexities of both four and two stroke engines.'

Aimed at boatowners rather than experienced mechanics, this book explains how even the most sophisticated of modern outboards use simple processes to convert fuel to power. A boon to anyone who puts to sea with an outboard engine. Includes rescuing an outboard dropped in the sea!
