Tania Bruguera: The Hyundai Commission
In 2018 the Hyundai Commission was undertaken by Cuban installation and performance artist, Tania Bruguera. Bruguera’s work often pivots around issues of authority, power and control. Several of her past works have interrogated and presented events in Cuban history, and she is world-renowned for her complex and absorbing performance pieces. For this installation, Bruguera explored the vitally contemporary issue of immigration and examined how that expands into notions of community and ‘the neighbourly’.
The annual Hyundai Commission gives artists an opportunity to create new work for Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall. The way artists have interpreted this vast industrial space has revolutionised public perceptions of contemporary art in the twenty-first century.
