David Nicolle was born in 1944 and worked for the BBC, including the overseas broadcasting service, before he returned to university and obtained his PhD in Edinburgh. He subsequently taught at Yarmouk University in Jordan. He now devotes himself to writing and is a specialist in medieval arms and armour. He is also a frequent contributor to numerous specialist journals and international conferences. He lives in Leicestershire, UK.
Adam Hook studied graphic design and began his work as an illustrator in 1983. He specialises in detailed historical reconstructions and has illustrated Osprey titles on the Aztecs, the Greeks, the American Civil War and the American Revolution. His work features in exhibitions and publications throughout the world. He lives in Sussex, UK.
The debacle of the Second Crusade in 1148 caused the Crusader States to realise the necessity of developing a more cautious strategy. The original expansionist spirit largely disappeared, and the Crusader States made priorities of strengthening their existing fortifications and towns and building new castles. These structures encompassed core aspects of Western European military architecture with the integration of rapidly developing Arab and Islamic traditions. Following Fortress 21: 'Crusader Castles in the Holy Land 1097-1192', this book examines the design, development and defensive principles of some of the best-known Crusader fortifications and castles, including Crac des Chevaliers, Castel Blanc, Arsuf, Margat, Atlit, Montfort and Acre.

Цікава публікація про дуже важливий етап розвитку оборонної архітектури
Книга "Замки хрестоносців в Святій Землі в 1192-1302 рр." розкриває дуже цікаву тему - важливого етапу розвитку мистецтва фортифікації. Адже саме у підкореній хрестоносцями Палестині у військовій архітектурі було застосовано цілий ряд новацій які зрештою були перенесені у Європу і вже там знайшли своє втілення у всім відомих замках європейських лицарів - замках Луари чи фортецях англійського короля Едуарда та ін. Хрестоносці активно взялись використовувати в будівництві камінь (адже в Європі до ХІ-ХІІ ст. укріплення були майже повсюдно дерев'яні) та запозичили цілий ряд архітектурних технологій від візантійців та арабів. У даній книзі описано період розквіту хрестоносних фортець в Святій Землі.
У вступі книги описується саму Палестину та її географію, клімат та політичну ситуацію. Далі подана хронологія подій періоду в Палестині. Далі докладно розкрито тему типів фортифікацій, технологій, особливостей використання ландшафту і т.д., а також типи самих фортець (навіть такий цікавий як "печерні фортеці"). Цікаво що про будівництво описано і на конкретному прикладі як конструювали фортецю Бегібелін 1136р. Окремий розділ присвячений принципам оборони. Далі йде екскурсія по 5 найвідоміших замках Палестини - Ревендел, Саоне, Гібелкар, Балвоір і Ла Вакс Мойсе. Після цього йдеться про життя замків - зокрема про життя лорда та їх використання як релігійних осередків. Також, окрім замків, розповідається і про міські фортифікації - зокрема про Єрусалим. І головне - замки на війні - розкрито історію оборони конкретних твердинь. В останньому розділі розкрито сучасний стан замків та в яких країнах та як їх можна відвідати. Все супроводжується чудовими фото замків, схемами фортифікацій та кольоровими реконструкціями як замків так і різних життєвих ситуацій у них. Також у книзі є всі необхідні мапи.
Книга дуже корисна та наводить безліч цікавих фактів, тому всім раджу придбати!
