Angus Konstam hails from the Orkney Islands, and is the author of over 50 books, 30 of which are published by Osprey. This acclaimed and widely published author has written several books on piracy, including The History of Pirates. His most recent work is a full-length piratical biography: Blackbeard: America's Most Notorious Pirate. A former naval officer and museum professional, he worked as the Curator of Weapons at the Tower of London and as the Chief Curator of the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum in Key West, Florida. He now works as a full-time author and historian, and lives in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Peter Dennis was born in 1950. Inspired by contemporary magazines such as Look and Learn he studied illustration at Liverpool Art College. Peter has since contributed to hundreds of books, predominantly on historical subjects. He is a keen wargamer and modelmaker. He is based in Nottinghamshire, UK
When the Romans left Britain around AD 410, the unconquered native peoples of modern Scotland, Ireland and Wales were presented with the opportunity to pillage what remained of Roman Britain. The Post-Roman Britons did their best to defend themselves by using fortifications. While some Roman forts were maintained, the Post-Roman Britons also created new strongholds, or re-occupied some of the hill-forts first built by their ancestors. The most famous warlord of the 'Dark Ages' was the legendary Arthur. His attempt to unite the Britons in the face of Saxon invaders was doomed, and in a little over two centuries the country had become Saxon England. However, for a few brief decades, 'Arthur of the Britons' did what he could to safeguard the culture and civilisation of Post-Roman Celtic Britain.

Книга про ранньосередньовічну історію фортифікації
Книга "Британські фортеці в Епоху короля Артура" торкається дуже цікавої теми, про яку на жаль дуже мало де можна отримати інформацію. Вона різносторонньо описує проблему існування та особливостей різних уфортифікованих поселень в Британії на зламі епох Стародавності та Середньовіччя. Взагалі слід відзначити, що подібних досліджень про історію розвитку фортифікацій у ранньому середньовіччі все ж мало або вони і взагалі відсутні. Тому дана публікація є хорошим винятком із тенденцій, а результати цього дослідження у певній мірі можна перенести і на процеси в інших європейських регіонах, що перейшли із під влади Риму під панування варварських королівств.
Дана книга написана і видана на дуже високому рівні і відповідає таким же хорошим іншим публікаціях із різних серій по військово-історичній тематиці, що виходять у видавництві Оспрей.
У книзі спочатку описано саму т.зв. "Артуріанську епоху" в Британії та подана хронологія основних подій від середини 3 до середини 7 століть. Потім описано особливості розташування та функцій різних таких поселень (наприклад фортець на півостровах чи на пагорбах, перебудов давніших римських поселень). після цього йде огляд конкретних фортець та поселень у регіоні. Окремий розділ присвячений життю в містах. Уже після цього в окремому розділі описано військову сторону - роль фортифікацій та укріплених місць в обороні та війнах. На кінці йде перелік різних місць сьогодні з інформацією про укріплення, давні поселення і т.д. (що може допомогти у мандрівках та туризмі).
Все в книзі чудово пояснено, як про теоретичні речі (наприклад про типології фортець, їх функції в обороні) так і док конкретних прикладів та описів укріплень, їх історії.
У книзі дуже цікаві ілюстрації - це кольорові малюнки реконструкції поселень (навіть є одна із "розтином" давнього житлового будинку із його інтер'єром), також є схеми фортець і багато фото різних місцевостей зараз, із валами, рештками укріплень і взагалі ландшафту.
Книга дуже цікаво і розкриває малознану сторінку історії фортифікацій у т.зв. "варварську епоху".
Всім безперечно раджу придбати та прочитати цю цікаву книгу!
