“A Woman of No Importance” and “Lady Windermere’s Fan” by Oscar Wilde (1854—1900) are come­dies of manners that were sharp satire on the society of that time and made the author famous during his lifetime. As a recognized master of paradox, Wilde embeds contradiction in the very titles of his plays developing it later on in the plot. Despite sarcasm, irony, mockery at social and family customs, his comedies are much more serious than they may seem at first sight. Brilliant author’s wittiness conceals the depth of the raised problems.
