About book

This is an automatically translated description

In the book Evil. Revealing the Essence of Evil in Literature and Art, the famous Finnish writer-philosopher Tarmo Kunnas analyses the manifestations of evil in fiction and artistic works and provides convincing and vivid evidence that evil cannot be unambiguous. Evil has not left indifferent artists and writers of all eras, from antiquity to the third millennium, and has beckoned them to descend into the unknown world of shadows. It is accustomed to hiding its true face behind various masks: Baudelaire's Flowers of Evil, Boccaccio's Decameron, the scene on the stairs in the film Battleship Potemkin by Sergei Eisenstein depict evil in completely different ways. It can lie dormant under the auspices of stupidity, weak morals or inertia. If you look into its eyes, you can recognise an absurd, terrifying, charismatic and vicious anger. Tarmo Kunnas manages to tear off the masks of evil and show its true nature. Thanks to numerous quotes and retellings of classic works of world literature on various manifestations of evil, the book reads like an adventure novel, and original views and ideas make it modern and relevant.

It will be useful for specialists - philosophers, historians, cultural studies experts, and anyone interested in modern humanities.
