A philosophical warning novel that it is not those who are treated in psychiatric hospitals who are really crazy, but those who are still at large.

An orderly from a psychiatric hospital, suffering from schizophrenia, has kidnapped Sergei, who has been admitted to the hospital. He recognises him as his late son. They settle in a mountain village where the orderly has bought a house. He would do anything for Sergiy. It comes to the point where the orderly kills a man who has begun to get close to revealing their secret.

And yet the psychiatric hospital continues to live its life. Its head, Yulia Vladimirovna, goes crazy after the orderly escapes with a patient. Viktor Andreyevich, who treated Sergei and managed to find the key to the hospital, is appointed acting head, if not for the kidnapping of the boy.
