This collection of works includes almost the entire creative output of a unique Ukrainian writer. Vasyl Stus is a Ukrainian poet of the sixties, a master of philosophical, lyrical, and satirical poetry. An innovator and experimenter in contemporary Ukrainian poetry. Numerous stylistic techniques of couplets and rhymes emphasise the poetics of his poems. Stus's poems are filled with philosophically expressive images of the path, fate, motifs of loneliness and struggle, death, and the comprehension of human destiny. Many of the poems also reflect the author's inner experiences after his arrest and reflections on camp life.
He also has natural philosophical reflections on the beauty of the world, which are combined with life-affirming calls for spiritual struggle. For his beliefs about the need to preserve and develop Ukrainian culture, he was repressed by the Soviet authorities, his work was banned and partially destroyed, and he was sentenced to a long stay in prison, where he died. He is a posthumous Hero of Ukraine.
