Mykola Kotsiubynskyi's story "In the Shackles of Shaitan" (1899) is traditional in many aspects: it reproduces very carefully, with picturesque ethnographic colourfulness, sometimes even with expressive naturalistic details, everyday life of a Crimean Tatar seaside village in the late nineteenth century.
