«Georg Drozdowski belongs to those who were lovingly called "old Austrians". He was indeed an old-fashioned Austrian, with all the characteristic features of his biography, upbringing, manners, psychology, and mentality. This characteristic was already manifested in his Slavic surname (later he would joke that in Bukovyna Poles had surnames like Zedlmayer or Friedl, and Germans had surnames like Turchynsky or Drozdowsky)

In 1984, a book by George Drozdowski entitled «Then in Chernivtsi and Around It» was published: Memoirs of an Old Austrian" was published in 1984. As can be seen from the title itself, this is a work about Bukovyna, about how the writer remembered it through the eyes of his heart. In it, the author tries to "protect from oblivion what in a few years will be of little interest to anyone, erased from memory and swallowed up by time. In the preface, he notes that «here we are not talking about exact dates, nor about the number of people and the area of the inhabited territory. It is much more important for me to show the coexistence, the unity in which we lived until the wave of European barbarism covered this small space called Bukovyna. It tells the story of how six nationalities lived side by side, how they coped with their daily concerns, trying to be the West in the East, that is, to stand under the sign of a culture that was European."
