The Phantom of the Opera (Le Fantome de l'Opera) is a gothic novel by Gaston Leroux that was written in the twentieth century, in 1909.

The staging of Faust is in progress in the Opera House in Paris. A prima donna Carlotta is successfully substituted by a young alternative member of a chorus Christine Daae. Viscount Raoul de Changy, who is in love with her, visits every rehearsal. But Christine is cold and it scares a modest heart of Raoul. He watches the young woman and discovers that she has a relationship with a strange man, almost a ghost, in a death mask. Who is this awful stranger?

Christine and Raoul fell in love with each other in the end. The ghost overheard their conversation and kidnapped the young woman. The searches don’t have any results. The only worker of the Opera, the Persian knows secret paths that can lead to the ghost. He tells the whole story of the «monster»...
