An elderly tenant, Charles McCarthy, has been murdered in the Boscombe Valley. Before his death, he quarreled with his son James, who is the suspect. James faces the gallows, and Sherlock Holmes finds the real culprit - a large landowner, John Tener, who in his youth was a robber in the Australian province of Ballarat.
