After the change of borders, seven hundred thousand Ukrainians remained in the People's Poland. They did not fit into the new vision of the state, so in the spring of 1947, the authorities decided to "finally resolve the Ukrainian question." Deportations began, covering all "suspected Ukrainians", including Lemkos and mixed Polish-Ukrainian families. The mass action lasted for three months. Some researchers agree that it ended in late September or early October 1947, but less systematic deportations continued for many years. In total, about 140-150 thousand people were deported. In many villages in the Bieszczady, Low Beskids, Lublin and Kholm regions, silence fell. The evictees settled several hundred kilometres away, near Olsztyn, Morąg, Gieżyckie, Węgorzew, in the Zielona Góra, Lower Silesia, and West Pomeranian voivodeships. Since then, they have always been accompanied by fear, which they have passed on from generation to generation.
