About book

This is an automatically translated description

Schönschreiben (translated from German as calligraphy) is an autobiographical story by Ukrainian writer Ivan Franko, which depicts the atmosphere of school education in Austria-Hungary.

First published in 1884 in the Lviv magazine Zorya. In the same year, it was translated into Polish and published in the Warsaw newspaper Prawda under the pseudonym Miron. It was included in the collection of short stories from the life of the working people "In the Sweat of My Brow" (1890).

The story artistically recreates the atmosphere of school education in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the second half of the 19th century with its scholasticism, corporal punishment and moral humiliation of students. The story is autobiographical and is based on the memories of studying at the German-language "normal school" of the Basilian Fathers in Drohobych. In Galician elementary schools of the second half of the nineteenth century, physical punishment was legalised for poor performance.
