From the publisher:

This book is to some extent a literary mystification. Because Mykola Gogol himself still remains mysterious and enigmatic. His birth, the reason for his loneliness, the gift of the seer, the overwhelming sense of messianism, the alleged burning of the second volume of Dead Souls, if it existed, his death and the disappearance of his head from the coffin...

Hohol took with him the secret of whether he had the one woman with whom he dreamed of uniting his fate and to whom he confided his most intimate thoughts. Analysing his epistolary letters to Maria Balabina, Alexandra Smirnova-Rosset, and Anna Vielhorska, the author is inclined to believe that there was. That is why he composed the manuscript from excerpts of real letters written by Mykola Hohol to various people, as if it were an imaginary one. If there was something missing to reveal the image of the writer and his then state of mind, he used the legends and myths known by a few of his countrymen.

The thoughts, feelings, and beliefs of one of the most prominent figures of world culture are still relevant today. To read them, to discover something unknown from his biography, to think about them is a great opportunity to remember the artist on the eve of the 200th anniversary of his birth.
