  • questions for conversations with your child about the content;comments from a psychologist.
A book box for primary school children and a manual that will help children fall in love with reading.
.

A useful tool for joint immersion in the world of books and promotion of family reading

.

50 books by contemporary Ukrainian writers selected by experts, as well as the practical guide «Living Writers. For Parents, which contains questions for conversations with a child about the content, ideas for joint play, and psychologist's comments.

All the books in the box deal with important and relevant topics for children aged 6-10. They are designed for different levels of reading competence - both for children who are just starting to read and for skilled readers.

The box can become a personal library for younger students, with age-specific tags for young readers, thematic (adventures, animals, etc.) and psychological (e.g. growing up, finding your own self) tags to help parents choose the most relevant for their child. Two main blocks —What to talk about and &em>How to play with it will guide the work. Books on complex topics (loss, aggression, discrimination) contain detailed psychologist's comments on what to pay attention to when reading and discussing.

“Family reading is not only a wonderful family tradition that will remain a warm memory for a child for life, but also a powerful contribution that parents can make to their child's development. The PISA international study shows that those students whose parents read a lot to them from infancy and during primary school achieve better results in their studies than other students. Discussion of various topics, daily events and school life also has a positive impact on academic performance. This manual contains both great texts for reading with a child and reading by a child, as well as plans for conversations to immerse them even more in the world of books," says Galina Titish, head of the Smart Education NGO and compiler of the manual.

“The project is designed to promote reading in several directions at once. First, parents will have the opportunity to spend quality time with their children. Secondly, children will be able to delve into the literary world, understand how many interesting things they can find in it and love reading too. Also, thanks to the expert advice, it will be easier for parents to talk to their children and develop the skills of analysis and empathy for the characters," said Anastasia Yevdokimova, Head of the Reading Promotion Department at the Ukrainian Book Institute.

“Modern children live in the digital age. They often lack live contacts, they are lonely, very sensitive, but at the same time they are not fully aware of their own emotions. Reading together with adults becomes not only a skill development, but also psychotherapy and empathy training for them, when a common emotional and value space is created, and the characters in the books turn into safe guides to a stable world. Children are more interested in reading if they have someone to discuss what they have read. This is a form of family communication," comments Svitlana Royz, a child and family psychologist who is one of the project experts.

“Ukrainian schoolchildren, overfed with unappetising, indigestible “classics”, today need not just “exciting reading”. It is crucial to offer them texts about the world that is relevant to them, challenges important for their age and useful tools for self-discovery, psychological resilience and national identity formation. For the generation growing up in unstable times of civic formation, in a space where even adults are in great need of support, works of contemporary Ukrainian literature will become reliable helpers. The works are not about the sufferings and cries of historical antiquity, but about peers, about situations, cities and places familiar to children - from educated creative people who live in the same world as they do," emphasises children's reading specialist Tetiana Stus.
