Jan Polkowski (b. 1953) is a poet, publisher and editor of periodicals and underground book publishing in the Polish People's Republic, and in free Poland he is the publisher and editor of the Czas krakowski magazine. Born in Berutov, he lived in Nova Huta since the age of two. In 1972, he entered the Polonics department at the Jagiellonian University. He is the father of two sons and two daughters, and the grandfather of five grandchildren.

His poetic debut was in 1978, when Polkowski published his poems in the uncensored literary quarterly Zapis, one of the most important Polish cultural magazines of the 1970s. His first book of poetry, To nie jest poezja, was published in 1980 by the independent publishing house NOWA, making him the only poet to make his debut in an illegal publishing house in the Polish People's Republic. In 1978, Polkowski became the editor of the student magazine Sygnal. During the Solidarity era, he organised a network of several hundred libraries at factory committees and supplied them with underground publications.
