This collection includes the best examples of short fiction by Oles Honchar (1918-1995). These are short stories, novellas, and a short novel, different in subject matter, but united by the author's creative instruction - to write about people "with light in their souls", those who live by the highest laws of humanity.

This is exactly how the reader sees the main character of the story «Ilonka» - a Hungarian girl who, despite the mortal danger, helps her father and fellow villagers find and neutralise an insidious bandit. The pages of the book are full of wise thoughts and observations, interesting judgements about man, his fate and essence, about the eternal categories of good and evil, honour and dishonour, conscience and justice.
