Time and place: Kyiv, 1994-95, the year before the end of the millennium. The novel features scrap metal collectors in the Chernobyl zone, employees of a bankrupt meat processing plant, the first Ukrainian guest workers, and racketeers. The world is collapsing, life is going to hell. Some concepts, however, are surprisingly stable: love, passion, friendship. The love of a student and an inexperienced businessman permeates all the stunning events.
