HISTORY

The history of the publication of Ivan Kotliarevsky's Aeneid goes back more than two hundred years. The poem was illustrated many times. There are many talented and famous artists who have touched upon the creation of Kotliarevskyi's literary images - Vasyl Korniienko, Hryhorii Narbut, Valentyn Hordiichuk, Anatolii Bazylevych. Surely, in the future, new generations of masters will come who will present the immortal work in a new, different way - no wonder, because from the first lines of the poem, the reader is literally immersed in such a fantastic and at the same time such a real world of Greek gods and heroes with a Ukrainian character."

"The Aeneid" is the first printed book in the Ukrainian vernacular, the first three parts of which were published in 1798. It was published despite the ban on printing books in Ukrainian in 1720. The historical, literary monument of Ukrainian culture, which actually started the countdown of the Ukrainian literary language, undoubtedly deserves such an edition! After all, the understanding of the Aeneid as the beginning of new Ukrainian literature has become a fact of cultural consciousness, while the poem itself has been and remains at the centre of readers', literary and cultural attention. It is also important that Kotliarevsky's Aeneid was the first printed work written in the "vernacular" language. On the pages of the poem, the author managed to convey a vivid ethnic colour, life and way of life of the Ukrainian people, their customs, traditions of communication, language, life details and peculiarities of world perception.

DESIGN

Oksana Ternavska's illustrations for this edition are truly impressive, as the book was prepared for three years. The characters skilfully drawn by the artist's brush, familiar to every Ukrainian since childhood, have lost the asceticism of A. Bazylevych (the most famous illustrator of the Aeneid), and comfortably settled in the luxurious scenery of the Ukrainian Baroque. It is known that the art of book illustration is very close to theatre, and the book artist is the main director of the action. And in this book, O. Ternavska became a costume designer, a prop designer, and a set designer. She even conducted the casting for all the characters. A unique world has been created! That's why the book looks like a bright film, the characters of which have come to us from the depths of time. The book has 42 full-page and 39 half-page illustrations, as well as 20 auxiliary elements of decoration and decor. All this makes the reader return to the book again and again - text and illustrations. And the commentary by A.F. Stavytskyi's commentary will allow you to analyse all the highlights of the poem. We are sure that after closing the book, you will definitely want to return to it more than once to turn over its bright pages again and again.
