The Second Vatican Council of 1962 and 1965 is undoubtedly the most important event in the church history of the twentieth century, which marked the beginning of the renewal of Christ's Church, its openness to the challenges and needs of the modern world.

In 1996, the Svichado Publishing House in Ukraine published a reprint edition of the documents of this Council, which were translated by the Basilian Fathers in Rome in 1964 and 1966. Our publication is a new attempt to present these documents to the Ukrainian reader. They have been translated from Latin, the language of all official materials of the Catholic Church, by a team of translators who have tried to convey their meaning as accurately and clearly as possible in modern Ukrainian.

More than 50 years have passed since the Council began, and its echoes continue to this day. The essence of its important documents and their significance are commented on in our publication by various people - both theologians and religious scholars; both from Ukraine and from around the world; both Roman Catholics and Greek Catholics, Orthodox and Protestants.

With sincere gratitude to the 1996 edition, which played a great role in familiarising Ukrainians with the spiritual treasures of this Council, we hope that the new edition will also be useful not only to theologians, religious scholars, seminarians, students of theological faculties, lay people of different churches, but also to people of good will in Ukraine in general.
