About book

This is an automatically translated description

The story of «Grandfather Ivanchik» — is the path of a highlander, hunter and molfar. On the kichers and zarinks, Ivanchik, competing for the right to be the best, practices «spells», «turnovers» and «chinks», attends weddings and funerals, church and meadow, deals with bandits and demons, mowers and molfars, builds, dances, reflects and smokes a pipe.

«Dido Ivanchyk» — is also an insight into the consciousness of a Hutsul in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, where the hail god is no less real than the emperor, and love for a mavka can be stronger than love for one's own wife.

A book with parallel text. In modern Ukrainian and the original Hutsul dialect.

From the translator

"«Dido Ivanchyk» — is the largest and, undoubtedly, the most important text written in Hutsul. This importance is formed from two equivalent components:

1) literary - because it is an original and interesting novel in the artistic sense with charismatic characters and various family, social, psychological, humorous, mythological, hunting, and even detective-criminal plots that are tightly intertwined;
2) historical, folklore, ethnographic and cognitive - because here the customs, beliefs, traditions, rituals, crafts, and way of life of the Starovitsky Hutsul region are described in an artistic form.

Obviously, such a text should be accessible to readers in all parts of Ukraine. Therefore, the mission of translating it into the modern Ukrainian literary language, which was undertaken by the Discursus publishing house with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation, seems to me to be of utmost importance. The fact that I was entrusted with this translation is a source of great pride for me.

Fully aware of this responsibility, I am trying to make this amazing text as accessible as possible to every person who reads Ukrainian, and at the same time preserve its linguistic and stylistic flavour as fully as possible, without which the work would lose much.

I hope that I will justify the trust and remain as invisible as possible in the translated text so that Hutsulshchyna can speak to the whole of Ukraine about itself in the voice of Petro Shekerik-Donikiv and Ukraine can hear it."

Responses

"And here (where is this strange?) is a Hutsul novel! Written by a native in an authentic dialect. Maybe not as literary as a sacred text."

Vasyl Karp’yuk, zbruc.eu

"The book is valuable anthropologically and ethnographically for its language, description of customs, demonstration of the thinking of the people of that time, values, rituals. But above all, it is a work of high artistic quality."

Myroslav Layuk, litakcent.com

"Without a doubt, this is the most important and outstanding text about Hutsulshchyna."

Andriy Lyubka, radiosvoboda.org

"Shekerik is probably the most prominent Hutsul of the twentieth century."

Taras Prokhasko, zbruc.eu

"«Dido Ivanchyk» reaches, because of the significance and artistry of what it recorded, on a par with the famous works of Ukrainian literature."

Stepan Protsiuk, day.kyiv.ua

The book was published with the funds of the UIC institutional support grant.
