After a long exile, UPA veteran Hutsul Ivan returns to the Carpathians. On 9 May, at the unveiling of a monument to the fighters for the establishment of Soviet power, where he was invited by mistake, he recognises the traitor who took him prisoner. The story-parable "Black Deer" is about eternal themes: heroism and betrayal, punishment and forgiveness, it is about the fate and great drama of a small person against the background of silencing the truth in the era of stagnation in the USSR. The book also includes two short stories by the author, whose characters are also real people. The lives of ordinary people have been the main interest of Serhiy Dyachuk since the publication of his main book based on the real story of a Hutsul family, the novel-trilogy The White River, in 2014.
