About book

This is an automatically translated description

George Orwell (1903-1950) is an English writer and publicist who became famous for his most famous dystopian novel 1984, where he depicted a terrifying totalitarian society of the future, as well as the story Animal Farm, which tells in an allegorical form about the formation of the USSR.

Unfortunately, against the background of these famous books, for many readers, another work of the writer still remains in the shadow, in particular his second novel Burmese Weekdays, which was based on the period when young George Orwell served in Burma as a policeman in the British imperial police from 1922 to 1927. This is a story about the dark side of British India, revealing the unpleasant and shameful episodes in the life of the empire that young Eric Blair had to witness firsthand and which forever changed his worldview - even before he became George Orwell, one of the most respected and quoted writers of the twentieth century.

«Burmese Weekdays» is the second novel in George Orwell's bibliography, written in 1934, in which even then you can see the germs of those basic themes for the writer, which later will sound even louder and more ominous in the cult «1984» and «Animal Farm». The novel is based on Orwell's personal experience when he lived in Burma, where he served as a policeman in the British colonial police. This time marks a turning point in Orwell's life - it was then that the transformation of a snobbish private school graduate into a writer who became the voice of public conscience took place.

The main character of the novel, Florey, is a kind of alter ego of the writer, a lonely and needy person who is trapped in a powerful system that destroys everything good in a person. He is surrounded by people with whom he has nothing in common and to whom he cannot fully open up, as both the Burmese and the British, and Florey himself, are tainted by the colonial regime in which they have to live.
